That’s right. You never thought you’d see this day, did you? 2021, otherwise known as The Year Without A Gimmick for my annual Learn a Book! series. We’ve come a long way, friends. It’s been years since I last successfully completed an annual Learn a Book! challenge. In 2015, we reproduced what I felt toContinue reading “Learn a Book! – 202[1 Year Without A Gimmick]”
Another year, another witty gimmick gone half-made. Last year apparently I promised to read 30 books and then proceeded to immediately forget that and, for the rest of the year, assume that I must have promised to read 19. So 19 books were read. This year is another one in which general fatigue and wearinessContinue reading “Learn a Book! – 20[20 From To-Be-Read]”
So, you’re telling me the season for spook is over? Think again, buddies. Some people leave Christmas decorations up until after New Year’s. Others leave Halloween decorations up until after Thanksgiving. I make the rules in this house.
We’re going (going) back (back) to simple (simple). Look. The past few years I’ve been all talk, no read. I set these kitschy challenges for myself (that I adore! oh, how I adore them!) but have I actually completed any of them? Ask 2017 and 2018. Those two fell right to bits and tatters, theyContinue reading “Learn a Book! – 30 in 2019”
2018 is the year of the people… who wrote books.
Believe it or not, I came up with the idea for this year’s annual reading challenge back in early 2016… two whole years ago (hint: lean towards believe it because it is 100% true). At this point I think I’ve booked myself out on reading challenges until at least the year 2020 (are you having that??).
Bookstores should offer human horse blinders at the front door, right next to the plastic shopping baskets. We’re all either the type of person who needs the former or the type that needs the latter. Key word: “needs.” This girl right here happens to want a basket, but need some blinders. When struck with the urge toContinue reading “Recent Reads – Halloween Edition 2017”
One of these years I’m going to run out of gimmicks.
This is not that year.
A week or so prior to moving, my mother instituted a ban on my buying any more books until after my arrival in North Carolina. I know. “You’ve got a ton you haven’t even read yet!” She said. “You don’t have any more room to pack them!” She even went so far as to physically remove theContinue reading “Recent Reads – July 2016”
“The Kingkiller Chronicles” by Patrick Rothfuss… on second thought, also just Patrick Rothfuss Raise your hand if you’re over A Song of Ice and Fire. Okay, maybe not over but raise your hand if it’s been quite the wait for any new material on that front and you’re sick of it and want something elseContinue reading “Follies & Fixations: May 2016”
For those of you who followed along with last year, learning some books was quite an accomplishment. In 2015 I read 30 books and racked up almost 12,000 pages. This year, rather than upping the same old ante again by tacking on a few more books to the total, I decided to shift the challenge over to those page counts.Continue reading “Learn a Book! – 20[16k]”
